San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio is the second-largest city in the state of Texas and the seventh-largest city in the United States. The city is rich in history and is often referred to as the "Gateway to the American Southwest". The biggest attraction in San Antonio is undoubtedly the Alamo, to which tourists flock in the thousands every year. The Alamo was a mission that was also the location of the infamous "Battle of the Alamo" during the Texian revolution. Today the Alamo is a museum where tourists can relive the history of the desperate last stand by the Texian defenders against Mexican forces.

Another attraction of note in San Antonio is the historic River Walk, which winds its way through the downtown area. Consisting of a network of walkways around the San Antonio River, and lined with shops, restaurants and bars, the San Antonio River Walk was built one story below street level, and only permits pedestrian traffic. It is a major tourist attraction and is constantly being expanded to connect new attractions throughout the city.

Sports enthusiasts may be a little disappointed in the San Antonio sports scene, with the exception of basketball fans. The San Antonio Spurs are San Antonio’s only high level professional sports team, and have won several times at the National Basketball Associations championships.

Other attractions in San Antonio include the Cathedral of San Fernando, the Tower of the Americas, and the historic Menger Hotel.

Travelers to San Antonio who are in the market for less expensive accommodations can choose from several inns and bed and breakfasts such as the Riverwalk Inn. More expensive accommodations can be found in the form of the Marriott or the Menger Hotel.

The San Antonio International Airport is located approximately eight miles from downtown San Antonio, in the north-central part of the city. San Antonio is served by several carriers such as United Airways, Northwest Airlines and Continental Airlines, all of which provide cheap flights in and out of San Antonio.
