Williamsburg, Virginia

Williamsburg, the former capital of Virginia that has been carefully and historically restored, gives travelers the chance to take a walk back in time and see how Americans lived in colonial times. The Colonial Parkway in Williamsburg is 23 miles long and adjoins the town with two other historical sites nearby: Historic Jamestown and Yorktown.Williamsburg has 88 original structures from the 18th century and early 19th century that have been restored and 500 more that have been rebuilt on their original sites. There are about 225 period rooms that have been remade with the authentic furniture, glass, silver, textiles, ceramics, tools, prints, maps, firearms, paintings, and more. This collection of pieces totals more than 60,000. Nearly 1 million visitors come to Williamsburg annually to see the costumed, bonnet and three-corner hat performers’ ride through the street painting a picture of American history. Williamsburg also has skilled craftspeople demonstrating and explaining their trades that were in use during that time period, such as a gunsmith, blacksmith, shoemaker, silversmith, wig maker, and musical instrument maker.Looking for cheap food? The taverns serve food and drinks at the same fares they were over 220 years ago!

Lodging

Many of the accommodations available in Williamsburg are made to look like the rest of Colonial Williamsburg and will give you the feeling you are actually staying in a hotel back in the 18th century. Many of them are the actual historical homes that have been remodeled as bed and breakfasts and inns. Some hotels with a historical feel to them are the Colonial Houses, the Fife and Drum Inn, the War Hill Inn, Williamsburg Hospitality House, and Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center. For travelers looking for cheap hotel rates and a more modern stay, if you will, try the Ramada Outlet Mall Williamsburg (located in the middle of the shopping district, hence the name), the Liberty Rose, and the Kingsmill Resort and Spa which is located right on the James river.

Travel

Travelers to Williamsburg will use the Williamsburg Jamestown Airport (JGG) located in the beautiful town of Williamsburg. The airport does not currently service any international passenger flights, and travelers flying internationally can use the close by Norfolk International Airport in Norfolk, Virginia. Williamsburg Jamestown does service to international corporate flights however. The airport has launched a new expansion project due to surpassing its record number of passengers each month.
